Tyler Area Basketball Officials Scholarship Classic donates to the East Texas Food Bank

The 16th Annual Tyler Area Basketball Officials (TABO) Scholarship Classic will be held on November 25th - 26th at UT Tyler. Event planners are hoping to raise enough funds to provide 4,000 – 8,000 meals for the East Texas Food Bank.

“We are truly grateful by the generous support of the Tyler Area Basketball Officials (TABO) Scholarship Classic,” said Dennis Cullinane, executive director of the East Texas Food Bank. “For every dollar donated to the East Texas Food Bank, we can help provide eight meals to our neighbors in need. This is a great opportunity to support your local student athletes and our hungry East Texas neighbors.”

The tournament will raise funds for basketball scholarships and, new this year; the tournament will also benefit the East Texas Food Bank. The tournament will include 14 East Texas area high school basketball teams. Officials said the East Texas Food Bank was the perfect choice as the food bank supports all of the East Texas counties that will be represented in the tournament.

360 Fitness holds third annual "Spin-A-Thon"
360 Fitness 360 Fitness in Tyler will hold a "Spin-A-Thon" benefiting the East Texas Food Bank on Saturday, November 26th.  Riders will keep Spin Bikes "spinning" for 8 hours straight to burn off all of the excess calories from many Thanksgiving dinners and to raise money for the East Texas Food Bank.  Food, live music, door prizes, an outdoor climbing wall, bounce house and much more will be at 360 Fitness for the "Spin-A-Thon".

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving comes to life at East Texas Food Bank in November

The East Texas Food Bank and LT24 will present A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Feast on Saturday. November 19 from 2-3pm at the East Texas Food Bank.  Donations of peanut butter will allow children to enjoy a feast of great snacks to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with the Charlie Brown gang!  Jelly beans, pretzels, popcorn and toast will be served along with a special presentation of the movie A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.

Great American Peanut Butter Festival in Grand Saline this weekend
Great American Peanut Butter Festival The second annual "Great American Peanut Butter Festival" will be held in Grand Saline, TX Saturday, November 12 from 7AM until 5PM. "The festival is a great way to kick off the holiday season," said Grand Saline Main Street Promotion Director Keith Parsons.
Last year, Grand Saline Main Street and Nutty's Peanut Butter broke the world's largest peanut butter and jelly sandwich record at 1342 pounds.  This year, the festival will feature a shot at $50,000 cash in the "Golden Peanut" event.  

Peanut butter pancakes, parade, a peanut butter bake-off and musical performances will all be held in Downtown Grand Saline during the festival.  Admission to the event is free, however donations of jars of peanut butter are requested to benefit the East Texas Food Bank. LifeWay Christian Store "Shopping Bag Drive"
LifeWay Christian Store LifeWay Christian Store in Tyler will hold a "shopping bag drive" during the month of November to benefit the East Texas Food Bank.  For $1 you can purchase a re-useable, canvas shopping bag that will be decorated with red and green crosses.  The bags will then be donated by LifeWay Christian Store to the East Texas Food Bank to distribute to partner agencies for Christmas food.

Lifeway Christian Store is located at 5510 South Broadway in Tyler and is open Monday-Saturday 9AM-9PM.
BGC's Fresh to Host Annual Steak Cook-Off

FRESH by Brookshire’s will hold its first Fresh Steak Cook Off Saturday, October 29 to benefit the East Texas Food Bank.

The contest will “pit” eight teams from local businesses, such as the Tyler Morning-Telegraph, Southside Bank, and Oak Properties, against each other to earn the “Ultimate Meat Master” title. Judges will include Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass, Restaurateur Mundo Villapuda, and Randy Whittemore of Certified Angus Beef, the major steak sponsor.

“Brookshire Grocery Company has a rich history of giving back to the community, and we at Fresh are proud to pass our blessings along to a great organization like the East Texas Food Bank,” said Fresh GM Steve Dellello. “And there’s no reason we can’t all have fun giving back, with some friendly competition, great food and music, and a host of other fun events to make this a wonderful day for the whole family.”

Martin Walker Attorneys at Law will underwrite live music throughout the day. Tickets can be purchased for $15 at Fresh by Brookshire’s or any Southside Bank Brookshire’s location in Tyler or Lake Palestine. Each ticket will be good for one Certified Angus Beef steak dinner including two sides. Rib-eye steaks, donated by Certified Angus Beef, will be judged on appearance (grill marks, seasoning, crust), doneness (cooked to a medium temperature), and taste.

In addition to the “main event,” the day will include games for kids, face painting, a miniature horse for children to view, a “strut your mutt” pet contest, and live music.

Kellogg’s® Food Away From Home and Stephen F. Austin State University team up to help fight hunger

In a collaborative effort to help fight hunger, Kellogg’s® Food Away From Home and Stephen F. Austin State University Dining Services are teaming up for nearly one month to donate cereal to a local area food bank. A bowl of Kellogg's® cereal will be donated to the East Texas Food Bank for every bowl of Kellogg's® cereal purchased by students on campus from October 3, 2011 to October 28, 2011. An estimated 6,400 servings of cereal are expected to be donated.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Texas ranks second in child food insecurity. Last year, the food bank distributed more than 19.5 million pounds of food, or 15 million meals, to the hungry in East Texas. This Kellogg and Stephen F. Austin State University Dining Services effort helps those in need and provides students with an opportunity to help support this important cause.

"Kellogg has supported food banks across the U.S. for nearly 30 years. On average, the company donates $20 million of products annually,” said Tim Knowlton, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility for Kellogg Company. “Our partnership with Stephen F. Austin State University Dining Services and the East Texas Food Bank is an example of our continued commitment to helping those challenged in these economic times.”

During the month of October, Cici’s Pizza is offering a free soft drink to their customers who bring in a canned food item to be donated to the East Texas Food Bank. CiCi’s Pizza has three locations in East Texas, two in Tyler and one in Longview.

“I feed a lot of people for a little price but no one can feed people like the East Texas Food Bank,” said Bob Westbrook, owner of CiCi’s Pizza. “We hope to collect a lot of food and feed our East Texas neighbors in need.”

September is "Hunger Action Month"
During Hunger Action Month, East Texans will have an opportunity to give food, money or time to help feed children, families and seniors who are struggling to provide food for their families. Starting September 1st, you can donate food at any Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods or Brookshire Brothers by purchasing extra food for our hungry neighbors.

Car Show benefits East Texas Food Bank

R.G Car Shows Productions will be putting on the 2nd Annual Xlassic Car Show and food drive at U.T. Tyler on University Blvd. and Lake Drive on Saturday, September 17th.  The show starts at 9:00AM and the public is asked to bring 5 canned goods to the show to receive a stuff animal of their choice while supply's last. They will also receive a people's choice ballot to vote on their favorite vehicle while attending.  There will also be bounce houses and games for the kids  to play while mom and dad  look at the cars. D.Q will be there selling mini -blizzards and Stanley's famous pit bar-B-Q will be selling sandwiches while supply's last. Come out and enjoy a fun day at the show and helping the East Texas Food Bank.

21st Annual Pantry Raid Underway

It's time once again for the annual Pantry Raid competition between Robert E. Lee and John Tyler High School. For over two decades, the students at each school have had a friendly competition to feed hungry East Texans. The students collect food during Pantry Raid for the East Texas Food Bank. The school that collects the most amount of food will earn bragging right and proudly display the traveling trophy at their school.

For the past 20 years, the students have collected over 887,000 pounds of food during the Pantry Raid competition.

Canned food donations will be collected by students on each campus through Friday, September 9th. The "winner" of the Pantry Raid will be announced during the R.E. Lee/John Tyler football game Friday night.

During Hunger Action Month, the East Texas Food Bank is bringing an exhibit to East Texas to raise awareness about the issue of hunger. In Michael Nye’s exhibit, About Hunger & Resilience, so much comes to light. The portraits and audio stories reveal the courage and fragility of those individuals who have experienced hunger. These diverse audio narratives take us underneath complicated issues where empathy and understanding begins.

"Big D Experience" premiere to benefit East Texas Food Bank

The "Big D" is coming to Carmike Cinemas in Tyler on Thursday, July 28th.  A special advanced screening of "Cowboys & Aliens" will be shown in a new state-of-the-art auditorium at 7:30pm.  Customers can get into the advanced screening by donating 4 cans of food at the door for the East Texas Food Bank or making a $5 donation.

Highway 80 Car Cruise to Benefit East Texas Food Bank

Attention automotive enthusiasts! Make plans to attend the Highway 80 Progressive Car Cruise on Saturday, July 23rd. The event will start from Wills Point starting at 7:30am and progress to Grand Saline, Mineola, and finally reach Gladewater at 4:30pm. Pre-registration is $25, with a portion benefiting the East Texas Food Bank. Local attendees can vote on their favorite car/truck for the "People's Choice" award by bringing a canned food item to donate. 99.3 Talk FM Holds "Lock Out Lock In"

While the NFL lock out continues, 99.3 Talk FM and sister station 102.7/106.9 The Blaze are broadcasting live from the Longview Mall until the end of the lock out is declared. The East Texas Food Bank will benefit as donations of canned food items are also being collected. Follow the "Lock Out Lock In" on Facebook to keep up with the latest.

Get Ready to "Stamp Out Hunger" with NALC

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) in East Texas will collect food donations to benefit those who are hungry in East Texas. This is the 19th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive which is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Food collected in the East Texas area will be donated to the East Texas Food Bank.

Simply leave a bag of non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 14th. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. The letter carriers will then collect donations from generous East Texans.

Valero and Feeding America "Fill Up to Fight Hunger"

With each 8-gallon fuel purchase made at a Valero station through East Texas, eight meals will be donated to the East Texas Food Bank. This program will run through the end of June, with up to $3 million dollars donated to Feeding America food banks nationwide.

On Tuesday, April 26, Jalapeno Tree restaurants in Tyler, Jacksonville, Longview, Henderson, Gun Barrel City, Kilgore, Marshall, and Carthage will be donating 10% of all total proceeds to the East Texas Food Bank to help feed the hungry across East Texas. This is a great opportunity for East Texans to enjoy their favorite Crazy Good Mexican Food while helping their neighbors in need.

23rd Annual Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour

This year’s 23rd cycling event Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour is presented by Kiepersol Estates and sponsored by the Tyler Bicycle Club to raise money for the East Texas Food Bank. KE Bushman’s is located at the intersection of 69 south and FM 2493.

“This year the Beauty and the Beast Bicycle Tour will benefit the East Texas Food Bank. We believe in the mission of the East Texas Food Bank and the way they carry out their work in providing such great service to our regional community,” said Michael Lewis, 2011 Beauty and the Beast Tour Director. “The Beauty and the Beast event offers an early sprint cycling event that has challenging routes, great rest stops, door prizes, a band a the finish and a celebration at the top of the BEAST. Every route will encounter the beast. There is a route for every level.”

Pound For Pound Challenge Inspires East Texas Residents to Lose Weight to Help the Hunger Crisis

NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Couples,” General Mills, Subway, and Feeding America are partnering on the Pound For Pound Challenge, a national initiative encouraging residents in East Texas and Americans across the country to lose weight to combat hunger in their local communities.

The Pound For Pound Challenge will secure up to 9.4 million pounds of groceries on behalf of local food banks. For every pound Americans pledge to lose, a donation of 11 cents, equivalent to one pound of groceries, will be donated to Feeding America.
