In celebration of Memorial Day, Smithfield partnered with Brookshire Grocery Company in Tyler to donate a combined 40,000 pounds of protein to the East Texas Food Bank. This significant donation is part of Smithfield's Hepling Hungry Homes tour, the company's coast-to-coast effort to help families and individuals become more food secure. Through this program, Smithfield has donated and delivered more than 25.4 million servings of protein to food-assistance organizations across the country.
Food banks nationwide are reporting a significant increase in the number of people coming to them for help. The current recession and the continuing rise in unemployment are having a profound effect on food banks’ ability to meet the demand. As a result, food assistance organizations across the country have been reporting that more individuals and families are turning to them for assistance including more first-time visitors, unemployed workers, employed individuals, seniors and families with children.
